Lachelle Metcalf
Lachelle Metcalf is a mission-driven, compassionate and visionary leader, guiding the next generation of leaders. Lachelle has enthusiastically supported students, families and educators within nonprofit, government and education sectors for nearly 20 years. From community engagement and special education advocacy to event planning and marketing/communications, Lachelle has dedicated her life’s work to helping and inspiring others. Lachelle received her BA from Hampton University (Hampton, VA) and MA from Catholic University of America (Washington, DC). She also completed Master’s level coursework in School Counseling at Mercer University. Lachelle is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Jack and Jill of America, Inc. and the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) School Site Council. She also serves as a volunteer consultant with The Acceleration Project, providing guidance and resources to under-resourced small businesses, particularly those owned by women and People of Color. Lachelle currently resides in the Los Angeles area with her husband and children.
Nijeul X
Nijeul X is a cultural organizer, strategist and producer with the wholehearted belief that art is at the tipping point for social change. He has worked alongside various national and local partners for the last decade leading creative production, strategy, and organizational change for some of the world’s most influential social impact campaigns, organizations, causes and brands. Past clients include: Google, BuzzFeed, the NAACP, the California Endowment and Center Theatre Group among others, to transform culture. His past work impacts a range of issues including equity in the arts, voter suppression, justice reform and immigration policy. Nijeul is a hands-on organizer and skilled facilitator of vision, pushing collaborators to be more bold and create change for the communities they serve–using art and culture. Nijeul holds a Master of Fine Arts in Management from California Institute of the Arts and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre from Howard University. @nijeulx
Shay Wafer
Shay Wafer, has demonstrated a stalwart dedication to the arts and community development through many years of service to the field. Her passionate vision is balanced with pragmatic experience, as she has held senior level positions at a number of non-profit arts organizations with a focus on African Diasporic programming and community engagement. Prior to WACO, Shay was the Executive Director of 651 ARTS in Brooklyn and the founding Vice President of Programs for the August Wilson Center for African American Culture, a multi-disciplinary center and museum in downtown Pittsburgh. Prior to that, she served as the managing director of Cornerstone Theater Company, LA Theatreworks and the St. Louis Black Repertory Company. She also was a founding partner of Marla Gibbs Crossroads Arts Academy and Theatre. Wafer has engaged in additional community and volunteer activities throughout her career including serving on the Board of Directors of National Performance Network (currently the Board Chair), Theatre Communications Group and as a New England Foundation for the Arts National Theatre Project and National Dance Project Advisor. Wafer has served as a peer panelist for The National Endowment for the ARTS, MAP Fund, Doris Duke, Mellon, Kresge and Bush Foundations, among others. She holds a BS from Howard University in Early Childhood Education and a MFA from the Yale School of Drama, Theatre Management program.
Tina Knowles
Tina Knowles is a noted designer, entrepreneur and art collector. As a fashion designer, she has been featured in publications such as Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Harper’s Bazaar, L’Official, InSyle, and Sports Illustrated. She has also designed costumes for a number of films including Dreamgirls, Pink Panther, Austin Powers Goldmember, Obsessed and Cadillac Records. Knowles, her family and extended family members have built and established a number of spaces for young people, including the Knowles-Rowland Center for Youth located in Houston, Texas. In 2010, Knowles partnered with her daughter to create the Beyoncé Cosmetology Center at Phoenix House in Brooklyn, New York as a resource to empower women, while providing them the life skills that would give them hope and a means of support after leaving the center. She co-founded WACO (Where Art Can Occur) Theater Center in 2016, providing a platform for artists and youth to live out their dreams through mentorship. She has received many awards including the prestigious Ace Awards, the International Global Leadership Award and the Golden Hanger Award. In 2011, Tina was honored by the University of Houston as part of their Living Archive Series and in 2014 by the Texas Women’s Empowerment among others.
